Your Song (1971) 3/22/20

Surprising facts about today's "Great Song of the '70s:"

1: Three Dog Night recorded it first, but they didn't release it as a single because they wanted to give their friend and opening act, Elton John, a shot at it. (After all, Elton and his collaborator Bernie Taupin had written it.)

2: It was originally the "B" side of a song called "Take Me to the Pilot." Radio DJs flipped it over and Elton's career was launched.

3: "Your Song" never made it to #1--anywhere in the world. In 1971, It did, however, make the Top 20 in 8 countries...including #3 in Canada and #8 in the US.

Not so surprising facts:

#1: Music critics loved the song, and so did other artists, including John Lennon.

#2: "Your Song" is #137 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

#3: In 1998, "Your Song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Fact is, "Your Song" is a "Great Song of the '70s!"

Just for fun, here's Three Dog Night's version:
