When Sting escaped from "Police custody" (to coin a pun), he started his solo career with a Great Song of 1985!
You'd expect nothing less!
The very first single from "The Dream of the Blue Turtles," his jazz-infused solo debut album, was a major hit.
"If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free," was a collaboration with jazz saxophonist and former" Tonight Show" bandleader Branford Marsalis--giving Sting some extra street cred with jazz musicians everywhere.
Whether he needed the boost is debatable, especially when you consider this: The song charted in 11 countries, including the US, where it topped the Mainstream Rock Chart, went to #3 on the Hot 100, and reached #10 on the Dance Club Chart.
(To be fair, in the those days, the Jazz Chart only included albums, not singles. so it's hard to say what impact it had with jazz audiences.).
In any event, "f You Love Somebody, Set Them Free" was a Great solo debut for Sting...and a Great Song of 1985!
Tomorrow: A hit to The Outfield.
