You Won't See Me - Anne Murray(1974) 3/2/22

You may be surprised to learn that Anne Murray is a HUGE Beatles fan. On the other hand, you might have guessed it from the fact that she covered a number of Beatles tunes, including today's "Great Song of 1965...and 1974."

But first, some background:

Before Paul McCartney met his first wife, Linda, he dated actress Jane Asher for a few years. Jane was the sister of Paul's good friend Peter Asher of Peter and Gordon--but I digress.

As Jane grew older, demand for her acting talents increased immensely. This cut back on the amount of time she could spend with Paul--and he was NOT happy about it.

Paul started writing songs about the situation, one of which became a standout track on the Beatles' 1965 album, "Rubber Soul."

Musically, "You Won't See Me" was inspired to a certain extent by the Motown sound, and although Paul's lyrics were bitter, they were tempered by a lighter touch, both instrumentally and vocally. In fact, many critics thought the excellent harmony vocals by John & George set the song apart from the rest of the album.

That said, it was never released as a single.

Now back to Anne Murray. In 1974, she was recording her album "Love Song." and thought "You Won't See Me" would make a great addition.

She was right: It WAS a great addition, and when it was released as a single, radio listeners in the US and Anne's native Canada agreed!

Up North, the song reached #4 on the Adult Contemporary Chart and #5 on the Top 40. In the US, it was a #1 hit on the AC Chart, and came in at #8 on the Hot 100.

Anne was thrilled...but the icing on the cake is when John Lennon told her it was one of the best Beatles covers he'd ever heard!
