You Sexy Thing - Hot Chocolate (176-77) 8/1/22

Sometimes you've got to tinker with a song before it becomes "Great," and the group Hot Chocolate can certainly attest to that.

"You Sexy Thing" was written by lead singer Errol Brown and bass guitarist Tony Wilson, and Errol dedicated it to his wife.

Prolific British Producer Mickie Most didn't think it was strong enough to be a hit, so in early 1975, he had it released as the "B" side to a song called "Blue Night." Unfortunately "Blue Night" wasn't a hit either.

So Mickie decided to remix "You Sexy Thing," highlighting a repetitive

fuzzy guitar riff and a Errol's quirky vocals, and re-released it on his own record label (RAK) several months later.

This time, the song swaggered into the Top 15 in 10 countries...reaching #2 in the UK and New Zealand. In the US, it topped off at #3 on the Hot 100 and #6 on the Soul Chart.

"You Sexy Thing" became Hot Chocolate's biggest hit by far...and a "Great Song of 1975-76!"
