Anne Murray was not surprised when today's "Great Song of 1978" went to the top of the charts. Why? Because she broke into tears the first time she tried to sing it--and if it affected HER that way.....
"You Needed Me" was a song about unconditional--but undeserved--love, and Anne was not the only one affected by its message. Millions of people in her home country of Canada--and millions more in the US--fell in love with it.
Up North, the song went to #1 on the Top 40, Country and Adult Contemporary Charts. It did almost as well in the States, reaching #1 on the Hot 100, #3 on the AC Chart, and #4 on the Country chart.
Anne won the Grammy for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance," becoming the first Canadian to win in that category, and in 1980-81, "You Needed me" was featured in an ongoing story line on the TV soap opera, "Guiding Light."
In 1999, the Scottish boy band "Boyzone" released a cover that charted all over Europe (but not in North America), and in 2017, Anne re-recorded the song as a duet with Shania Twain.
