You & Me - Alice Cooper (1977) 6/12/22

Alice Cooper was annoyed. After years of filling stadiums for shows full of theatrical hard rock, the critics just wouldn't cut him a break.

In an interview with Creem Magazine, Alice explained: "I kept reading so many interviews and articles that I said I was never considered musical. Best rock show they ever saw, but musically lacking."

Out of spite, the Godfather of Goth released three soft ballads in a row (all co-written by guitarist Dick Wagner). He called them "Heavy Metal Housewife Rock."

The first was 1975's "Only Women Bleed," which we highlighted on 10/27/21.

The second was "1977's "I Never Cry," which we highlighted on 1/23/22.

(You can read about them both below.)

The final song of the 3 is today's "Great Song (also) of '77:" You and Me."

It was way out of character: a romantic easy listening style hit that celebrated the every-day pleasures of two people sharing their lives together.

The song reached #2 in Australia, #3 in Canada and #9 in the US.

Once again, the critics took him to task, this time saying he had "sold out," but as far as Alice was concerned," he proved them wrong and that was that.

"You and Me" by Alice Cooper: a "Great Heavy Metal Housewife Rock Song of 1977," and don't you forget it!
