The group Hi Inergy were relative latecomers to the Motown label, not joining the "Hitsville USA" roster until 1977.
They started with a "Great Song," too...with their first single release, "You Can't Turn Me Off (in the Middle of turning Me On)" climbing to #2 on Billboard's Soul Chart and #12 on the Hot 100.
I always thought a better title would be, "Hey, Come Back Here," but that's just me. :-)
Unfortunately, the their ode to frustration was their only big hit. The ladies released several other songs before they broke up in 1984, but most of them peaked well below #50 on the Soul Chart.
Still, High Inergy could hang their hats on scoring a "Great Song of 1977" right off the bat, with "You Can't Turn Me Off (in the Middle of Turning Me On!)"
Tomorrow: It takes a village, people!
Coming soon: Great Songs of the '80s!
