You Are Everything - The Stylistics (1971) 3/9/22

The songwriting team of Thom Bell and Linda Creed were major architects of the smooth Philadelphia sound that became incredibly popular in the '70s.

Thom and Linda--who were later (and separately) inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, wrote and produced dozens of songs for groups like The The O'Jays, The Spinners, The Delfonics, and today's featured group: The Stylistics.

In fact, Thom and Linda helped the Stylistics launch their career with a series of "Great Songs" and albums.

Today, however, we're going to narrow it down to The Stylistics' first triple-chart hit, 1971's "You Are Everything," which was released from their self-titled debut album (which has been called a landmark of Philadelphia soul.)

For the record, the song reached #9 on the Hot 100, #10 on the Rhythm & Blues Chart, and #24 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.

"You Are Everything," features the incredible falsetto of Russell Tompkins, Jr. and set the tone for the group's future string of mellow hits.

It's easy...laid back...smooth as silk...and a "Great Song of the '70s," thanks to Thom Bell, Linda Creed, Russell Tompkins, Jr. and The Stylistics!

Note: In 1974, a version by Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross was released, but ONLY in the UK, where it reached #5 on the charts and sold more than 250,000 copies--the first ever Motown release to reach that milestone in the United Kingdom!
