One of the MANY "Great Songs of the '60s" by The Four Seasons was 1966's "Working My Way Back to You."
It's the story of a man who cheated on his girlfriend, realizes he screwed up, and has vowed to do his best to reclaim her love and trust.
The song was described as a "raunchy blues-drenched ode," and it cracked the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 at #9.
Not sure "raunchy" is accurate, but there is definitely a "growl" to Frankie Valli's lead vocal.
Skipping ahead to December of 1979, The Spinners put together a medley of "Working My Way Back to You" with a perfectly-matched song called "Forgive Me Girl," added their patented harmonies, and put a disco beat behind it.
When the song was released in December of '79, it made Billboard's Disco Chart at #8, but it also made the Top 10 on 3 OTHER Charts: #6 on the Soul Chart, #5 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, and #2 on the Hot 100!
AS a Quadruple Chart hit, it transcended disco as a "Great Song" that almost EVERYONE could enjoy-- and not just in the US!
Before it finally fell off the charts in March/April of 1980, It had topped the charts in the UK and Ireland, reached #2 in The Netherlands, #3 in New Zealand, #5 in Canada, and #8 in Switzerland!
