Not many artists can say they recorded a "Great Song of the '70s" on a yacht, but Paul McCartney can!
In fact, in 1977, Paul, Linda and Wings recorded their entire "London Town" album aboard the boat "Fair Carol," which was anchored in the Virgin Islands and outfitted with a complete, state-of-the-art 24-track recording studio.
Must be nice!
The first single from the album was today's "Great Song of the '70s:
"With a little Luck." Released in 1978, it featured Paul playing bass, electric piano and synthesizer...with Linda and Denny Laine on pianos and background vocals, and Joe English on drums.
Billboard Magazine called it "optimistic and celebrative," while Cashbox called it "smooth and soothing." Everyone else called it a hit!
Today, it might be called "Yacht Rock." Literally. ;-)
Anyway, "With a Little Luck" It charted in 9 countries...including the UK (#5), Ireland and New Zealand (#3), and #1 in the US and Canada!
That, in spite of the fact that the song was nearly 6 minutes long. That was usually a problem for Top 40 radio back then, so a short version was also released. But hey, this was PAUL McCARTNEY, so radio stations almost universally played the long cut.
"With a Little Luck" by Wings: a "Great Song of 78!
