When Peter Cetera, founding member and lead singer of Chicago, left the group to continue his burgeoning solo career in 1985, more than a few people wondered if the group would would ever have another hit.
After all, Peter had last appeared on the "Chicago 17" album which sold more than six million copies, and featured his vocals on Great Songs like "Hard Habit to Break" and "You're the Inspiration."
Well, as it turned out, it didn't take very long to successfully replace him...and the Great Songs just kept on coming!
When "Chicago 18" was released in 1986, Peter had been replaced by new lead vocalist/bassist Jason Scheff, who immediately put all conjectures to rest with today's Great Song of 1986-87: "Will You Still Love Me?"
The song was co-written by songwriter/producer David Foster, Tom Keane, and Richard Baskin. David and Tom also played keyboards on the track along with Chicago's long-standing lineup of instrumentalists and Steve Lukather of Toto, who added some extra guitar licks.
In early 1987, "Will You Still Love Me?" rose to #2 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart and #3 on the Hot 100.
Chicago didn't miss a beat, so to speak...with Jason Scheff on lead vocals--and a Great Song of 1986-87. I guess you could say that music lovers still loved Chicago!
Tomorrow: Irresistible Mr. Palmer.
