During the 1960s, Billy Preston was one of the most sought after R & B session musicians in the business. He played keyboards on songs by Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and many others.
But then, in 1969, he played organ on the #1 hit “Get Back,” which was credited to “The Beatles, with Billy Preston.” Thanks to that little bit of “FAB” exposure, his career REALLY took off!
He continued to play sessions with the Beatles and other high powered acts like Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones, but he also went solo and had several hits of his own. (Check out “With You, I'm Born Again,” his hit with Syreeta Wright—a song we highlighted this past Valentine's Day).
In 1973, he was joking around with his songwriting partner, Bruce Fisher, and told him he was going to “write a song without a melody.”
Before long, “Will It Go Round in Circles” went to #1 in both the US and Canada, and sold over a million copies.
Well, of course the song has a melody—even though the tongue-in-cheek lyrics says it doesn't. But melody or not, “Will It Go Round in Circles” is a “Great Song of the '70s!”
