Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway were classmates at Howard University in Washington, DC, and not only became good friends...but duet partners who recorded a number of "Great Songs" in the '70s--until Donny's developing mental illness led to his unfortunate death by suicide in 1977. He was only 33.
Their first collaborative effort was in 1972: an album of duets that contained the song "Where is the Love?"
It's a classic tale of a romance on the rocks--but with a twist:
They aren't singing to each other; they're both singing as if THEY are the ones being hurt.
The story goes like this: Girl leaves boyfriend, Girl tells another guy she loves him. Girl goes back to original boyfriend. Guy is confused.
This leads to the obvious question: "Where Is The Love?"
The song went to #1 on Billboard's Easy Listening and Soul Charts, and it won the Grammy Award for "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals." And rightfully so! "Where is the Love" is a blend of two Great voices, singing one "Great Song of the '70s!"
Tomorrow: Joe finds his way.
