Whenever I Call You Friend 1/8/20

In the late 1970s, pop stars (and songwriters) Kenny Loggins and Melissa Manchester kept running into each other at award shows. They always seemed to be paired together to present an award or two, and they became friendly offstage.

Finally, Kenny asked Melissa if she wanted to write something together. She said, "Yes," so one night in early 1978, Kenny stopped by her house and, in just a few hours, they wrote a "Great Song of the '70s." Just like that! It went to #5 in the U.S, and #3 in Canada for Kenny...and Stevie Nicks!

Wait...what?

Actually, Melissa recorded it, too--a slower, more elegant version for her self-titled 1979 album. She was not happy with it, so it was never released as a single.

TRIVIA: Technically, Kenny's version was his first solo hit--because Stevie was not credited on the single. (She was, however, credited on the album.) It all sounds a little strange, but in the end, Kenny, Melissa and Stevie created something great in '78!
