In 1978, songwriter Even Stevens had a song he REALLY wanted to pitch to Dr. Hook. So much so, he followed the band's producer Ron Haffkind into a studio bathroom to do it.
Apparently, Stevens emerged “flush” with success. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself!)
The song appeared on Dr. Hook's next album (“Pleasure and Pain”) and the single was an international smash, reaching the Top 10 in 9 countries, including #1 in the UK.
In the US, it went to #5 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart and #6 on the Hot 100. The numbers were similar in Canada: #7 AC and #4 Top 40.
Oddly enough, while it was considered a Disco song in several European countries, in the US and Canada, it actually made it to the lower level the Country charts! (#68 in the US, #22 in Canada)
It was so successful overall, Dr. Hook also added it to their NEXT album (“Sometimes You Win”)!
I guess that proves that “When You're in Love With a Beautiful Woman,” a “Great Song” is a “Great Song” no matter what format it fits into!
