Motown may have been known as "Hitsville, USA," but they weren't the only record label operating out of Detroit.
At one point in the early'60s, today's featured group was known as The Sensations, but after a few years of... nothing...they changed their name to The Dramatics, and signed with Golden World Records.
But then Motown bought the label, and it was, in effect, "Everybody out of the talent pool!"
So The Dramatics went to ANOTHER Detroit label, Sport Records, where they came up with a song called "All Because of You," which pretty much went nowhere. (Check it out below.)
Finally, the group left Detroit behind, and moved to Memphis, where they were signed by the groundbreaking Stax/Volt label.
In short order, they released today's "Great Song of 1971:" "Whatcha See is Whatcha Get," a song that featured a funky groove and rotating lead vocals and vocal effects.
Sometimes you have to leave your hometown to find success, and such was the case for The Dramatics.
What they SAW was an opportunity, and what they GOT was a "Great Song of 1971!" "
"Whatcha See is Whatcha Get:"
"All Because of You:"
