Whatcha Gonna Do (1977) 12/21/20

There's not a whole lot of information available for today's “Great Song of the '70s,” and I find that odd, since in the summer of 1977, it was all over the airwaves.

Whatcha Gonna Do” was the first big hit by San Francisco's Pablo Cruise, charting at #6 on Billboard's Hot 100, and topping Canada's Top 40. Those numbers are great for a debut single, but I think we can consider it a “Great Song” because it's pretty clever in its own way.

It's all about a guy whose been treating the woman who loves him like dirt, and a friend is calling him out on his behavior. The song sounds so upbeat...but...is it really?

Some guys (jerks) heard the song, took it as a wake-up call, and tried to change, but most people just turned up the radio and enjoyed the tune!
