Over the past 3+ years, I've highlighted all of the biggest hits and soundtrack favorites from the 1978 movie "Grease, "with one exception: "We Go Together."
There is a reason I waited to tackle it, but first things first...
The song was never released as a single, but I can personally attest to the fact that as an album cut, it was a definite floor filler in the clubs--and at high school and wedding dances.
It's a doo-wop extravaganza, stringing together every '50s nonsense phrase in just a few short minutes--and yet, somehow it comes off as sentimental.
"We Go Together" is a "Great Song" from a "Great Musical," and that brings me to a fan theory about the song I want to address.
Many people believe that at the end of the film, while the song is being sung and Danny and Sandy are FLYING away in "Greased Lightning" (the car), it's because Sandy is dead and has been the whole time. And the whole movie is Sandy's dream as she slips away while in a coma.
This theory stems from a line Danny sings in the song "Summer Lovin':" "I saved her life; she nearly drowned."
The idea is a stretch, but it's possible. It's also hogwash. There, I said it.
Now, Let me tell you why.
As an actor and director, and someone who has read the script and seen the stage musical several times--including a professional touring show, I can tell you that the song comes at the end of Act 1, and not the end of Act II.
(Some productions, however, do take the liberty of moving it to the end--like TV's "Grease Live" a few years ago, but that's not the way it was originally written.)
The movie ending was a creative choice by director Randall Kleiser, who wanted to symbolically depict Danny and Sandy flying off into the sunset to their happy ending. You might say that it's a rather ambiguous ending and up to interpretation, and you wouldn't be wrong... HOWEVER:
Both John Travolta, who played Danny in the film, s well as Doody in the Broadway production, and Jim Jacobs who CO-WROTE the show are on record as saying that Sandy did NOT die--in the show OR in the film.
One more thing: When the auto shop teacher sees the finished version of "Greased Lightning," she foreshadows the ending by telling the gang,"If it were in any better condition, it would fly!"
But back to the song itself: "We Go Together"is just plain fun, and a rousing way to end Act I... and/or a movie or TV show! It's a"Great Song of 1978! Absolutely no doubt!
