Waterloo - ABBA (1974) 3/6/21

Lots of fun links today!

In 1974, today's "Great Song of the '70s" was the winning entry in the Eurovision Song Contest--a European competition where groups would submit song entries, and the winner would then perform it live on TV and radio. (This contest was not only extremely popular back then, it's still going strong 2021)!

The winning SONG was originally sung, recorded and released in Swedish, but the winning GROUP also recorded a version in English to garner wider appeal.

SIX MILLION records later, "Waterloo" by a new group called "ABBA" had reached the Top 10 in EIGHTEEN countries...including #1 in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Switzerland and the UK! In Canada, it reached #7, and here in the US, it hit #6 on the Hot 100.

For the next several years, ABBA cranked out hit after hit...but this was their first and one of their best.**

My theatre friends know that "Waterloo" is featured in the encore of the ABBA-based Broadway musical "Mamma Mia," and sung over the end credits of the film version. It's also performed in the sequel, "Mamma Mia--Here We Go Again!"

"Waterloo:" a "Great Song" since 1974!
