Video Killed the Radio Star 11/28/19

Today's "Great Song of the '70s" was the first song (video) to be played on MTV. "But Mike," you say, "MTV didn't sign on until the '80s." True. August 1st, 1981 to be exact, but MTV head honcho Bob Pittman thought this song from 1979 was the obvious choice to kick things off. (He was also responsible for hiring Martha Quinn--and guys my age are still thankful for that!) During its initial release, this song went to #1 in 14 countries, NONE of which were the U.S., where it stalled way down at #40. MTV, however, gave the song a new, long-lasting life.So long, in fact, that on 2/27/00, it had the honor of being the one MILLIONTH video played on MTV!
