As the '70s began, Creedence Clearwater Revival was hot...scoring "Great Song" after Great Song!"
Today's we're focusing on the first single release from their 1970 album: "Cosmo's Factory." It actually turned out to be a two-sided worldwide hit:
"Up Around the Bend" and "Run Through the Jungle."
By all accounts, "Up Around the Bend" was the bigger hit, but "Jungle" was also mighty strong. Most countries, however, including the US, combined the two songs into one chart position.
Together, they reached the Top 10 in 12 countries, grabbing the top spot in Canada and The Netherlands. In the US, it peaked at #4.
In the UK and elsewhere in Europe, the songs reached #3...but not until after a clarification. In British English, "Up Around the Bend" is slang for "going insane." But CCR's John Fogerty, who wrote the song," was using US English to mean there was a new world coming, "up around the riverbend." Once that was made clear, the song made sense overseas. :-)
In the end, it was two "Great Songs of 1970" one "Great Single" from CCR: "Up Around the Bend" and "Run Through the Jungle!"
