From 1968 to 1988, one of the most prolific, yet under-appreciated, hitmakers on the Billboard charts was Tyrone Davis.
In that 20-year span, he made more than 40 appearances on Billboard's Soul Chart, with 12 of those songs reaching the Top 20.
Oddly enough, only TWO of those 40 songs were hits on the Hot 100:
1969's "Can I Change My Mind?" (#5), and Today's "Great Song of 1970:' "Turn Back the Hands of Time," which made it to #3. (None of Tyrone's other soul hits made it higher than #32!)
Maybe it was because he wasn't a Motown artist (although he grew up in Saginaw, not very far from Detroit). Maybe it was because he spent most of his career based in Chicago--a city known for the blues, as opposed to soul music hotspots like Philadelphia, Memphis, New York and LA...but the man could SING!
"Turn Back the Hands of Time" was composed by songwriters Jack Daniels and Bonnie Thompson, based on some romantic problems Jack was having at the time. Tyrone did such a good job with the song, the record company (Dakar) built an entire album around it, and the single...well, I think it's EASILY a "Great Song of the '70s!"
