Tragedy - Bee Gees (1979) 1/19/23

One day in 1978, while the Bee Gees were filming their parts in the "Sgt. Pepper" movie, they found themselves with an afternoon off.

Instead of kicking back and relaxing, Berry, Robin and Maurice sat down and wrote THREE "Great #1 Songs" before midnight!

We've already highlighted "Too Much Heaven" and "Shadow Dancing (which brother Andy took to #1).

The third #1 was "Tragedy," an up-tempo disco song about having an emotional break-DOWN after a nasty break-UP.

Fun Fact: While in the recording studio, Barry wanted to use a thunderclap sound effect on the track. After a few moments of thought, he cupped his hands around a microphone and made an explosive noise, which he then overdubbed several times...

When "Tragedy" was released as a single from the album, "Sprits Having Flown," it was FAR from a tragedy: #1 in NINE countries--including the US & Canada, and Top 10 in NINE MORE! In the US alone, it was their 5th straight #1 song of the year--very impressive!

In late 1998/early 1999, the British group "Steps" released a cover version that was a hit just about everywhere except North America-- reaching #1 in the New Zealand, the UK and Scotland, and the Top 10 in several other countries.

From "Tragedy"...to success! It was a "Great Song of 1979" by The Bee Gees, and again in 1998-99 by "Steps!"
