During the '80s and '90s, One of the most popular shows on The Disney Channel was "Kids, Incorporated," a series about a group of teens dealing with youth-oriented issues--from dating to peer pressure to child abuse and more.
They all belonged to a band called Kids incorporated, (What else!?) and each episode featured a musical performance by the cast and any visiting guest stars.
Much Like The Mickey Mouse Club (only different). "Kids Incorporated" launched the careers of several talented performers, including, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Mario Lopez, and Stacy Ferguson, known to one and all as "Fergie."
And then there was Marta Marrero, aka Martika. who played Gloria on the series--and is the artist behind today's Great Song of 1989!
Martika was actually the first of the "Kids" to have a hit record, and she wrote it herself.
"Toy Soldiers" was written about a friend who was battling a cocaine addiction, and in Martika's words, "It was the first time got the nerve to write about something that was scary for me to talk about."
When the single was released from her eponymous debut album, it struck a chord with young people all over the world. In fact, "Toy Soldiers" became a Top 10 hit in 12 countries, including #1 in New Zealand, and here in US on Billboard's Hot 100.
That was great news for Martika...but then something even greater happened: her friend kicked the addiction!
"Toy Soldiers" by Martika: a "Great Song of 1989!
Tomorrow: 1979 Music Box.
