One of the smoothest singers of the late '50s and early '60s was Johnny Mathis. He was all over the charts during that time and some of the songs he released back then are still played on oldies stations today—especially at this time of year—when you'll hear his versions of “It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas,” “Winter Wonderland” “and It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” on radio stations dedicated to Christmas music during the Holiday season.
Johnny is a member of the Grammy Hall of Fame, the American Songbook Hall of Fame, and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from American Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
Johnny scored his first #1 hit, “Chances Are,” in 1957, ”and 21 years later, he teamed up with Deniece Williams for a “Great Song of 1978!”
“Too Much, Too Little, Too Late” was billed as a comeback song for Johnny...but he had never really gone away. Plus, his clear tenor voice was just as smooth as it ever was.
Radio listeners loved the song across the board, sending it to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100, Adult Contemporary Chart and Soul Chart.
To be fair, Deniece also did a fantastic job—and if you're going to sing a duet...you might as well sing with a legend, right? :-)
And, by the way, Johnny is STILL out there performing at the age of 85!
