The '70s were quite a decade for The Bee Gees! That, of course, is an understatement. :-)
From the beginning of the disco era, through "Saturday Night Fever" and into 1979, they racked up a whole list of "Great Songs.
In fact, at one point, they scored SIX #1 songs in a row!
Today, we're highlighting #4 of the 6: a song they donated to charity, which later appeared on their post "Saturday Night Fever" album: "Spirits Having Flown."
"Too Much Heaven was a MONSTER hit: #1 in TWELVE countries, and landing in the Top 10 in NINE more!
In the US alone, it was #10 on Billboard's Soul Chart, #4 on the Easy Listening Chart, and #1 on the Hot 100.
The United Nations had designated 1979 the "International Year of the Child," so the Bee Gees decided that all publishing royalties from "Too Much Heaven" would go to UNICEF. (The United Nations Children's Emergency Fund). The final total donated was $7 MILLION!
Trivia #1: The brass accompaniment on the song was provided by James Pankow, Walt Parazaider and Lee Loughnane of Chicago.
Trivia #2: The song was originally written for the John Travolta movie, "Moment by Moment," but was pulled after Barry Gibb saw a rough cut of the film and thought it was awful.
"Too Much Heaven:" #4 of 6 number ones in a row for the Bee Gees...and a "Great Song of the '70s," used for a great cause: UNICEF!
