Tony Bennett has died at age 96. I won't even TRY to cover his career, his legacy, his longevity, OR his appeal to music lovers of several generations. You can read about him below in his obituary from The Hollywood Reporter.
As for his music, since my blog is about Great Songs of the 70s and 80s, I am going back to the '70s today and highlighting his 1976 version of one of the Greatest Movie Songs of all time: "As Time Goes By" from "Casablanca."
Tony is in fine form (he was ALWAYS in fine form) on this recording, and it did quite well on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart, reaching #28.
It was his last American chart hit until 2006, when he reached #22 on the same chart with "Just in Time," his duet with Michael Buble'.
Rest in Peace, Tony Bennett: from San Francisco to NYC, you've left our hearts full of great music.
