Time Passages (1978) 6/30/20

On rare occasions, a singer/songwriter will write something with the specific intent of CREATING a chart topper...and then it actually BECOMES a chart topper.

In 1978, Al Stewart admittedly had “hit single” on his mind when he wrote the title track for his album, “Time Passages.” To give it an extra pedigree, he hired Alan Parsons (of the Alan Parsons Project) to produce it.

When everything was said and done, “Time Passages” had spent 10 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Easy Listening Chart—the longest stay at the top of that chart during the entire decade! It also reached #1 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary Chart. On the Top 40, it reached #7 in the US and #10 in Canada.

The title may have been “Time Passages,” but time stood still for 10 weeks in 1977, when Al Stewart's quest to write a hit song became a “Great Song of the '70s!”
