Then Came You (1974) 8/7/20

Updated: Aug 8, 2020

Dionne Warwick had some big hits in the '60s (including Top 10 songs like “Walk On By,' “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose”) but Then Came the '70s. Her chart success disappeared. Things got so bad, she consulted a fortune teller for advice and here's what she got:

“Add an 'E' at the end of Warwick.” Seriously.

But Dionne was so desperate, she did exactly that. And Then Came The Spinners.

The Spinners were on the forefront of the smooth new “Philadelphia Sound,” being made popular by Barry White, The Three Degrees, The O'Jays and others. Someone suggested they team up, and then came “Then Came You.”

This “Great Song of 1974” featured Dionne trading lead vocals with The Spinners' Bobby Smith and Phillippe Wynne, and in the end, it became the first #1 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 for both Dionne AND The Spinners! It also reached #2 on the Soul Chart and #3 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. It was even nominated for a Grammy.

Dionne was back...and by 1975, she was so happy with her new-found success, she dropped the extra “E!”

“Then Came You: A “Great Song of the '70s!
