Today we have an interesting crossover: A “Great Song of the '70s” that went to #1 on one chart in 1975...and another chart in 1976.
The 1975 film “Mahogany” was about a fashion designer trying to make it big in Rome. Its star, Diana Ross, sang the “Theme From Mahogany,” which was actually titled “Do You Know Where You're Going To?” (Yes, Grammar Police, the question ends with a preposition. :-)
The song originally had been recorded two years earlier by Thelma Houston, but didn't chart. So Berry Gordy, head of Motown, executive producer of the film, and Diana's former flame...decided to have Ms. Ross record it and use it in the film.
It was a good decision. In early December of 1975, the song went to #1 on Billboard's Easy Listening Chart...and then, in late January of 1976, it found its way to #1 on the “Hot 100.” In Canada, it went to #4. It was also nominated for an Academy Award (Best Song).
“Do You Know Where You're Going To?” A “Great Song of 1975 and 1976!”
