Today, Nancy and I are celebrating our 28th anniversary. Of course, our wedding day was unique in its own special way, with personal touches that included family and friends on both sides of the aisle. (FAR too many to mention!)
Of course, there was music—much of it personalized and meaningful to us as a couple, and like so many couples before—and after—us, we included a “Great Song of the '70s!”
In 1969, at the wedding of Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary), best man Paul Stookey wrote and performed a song for the ceremony that he later recorded for his 1971 album “...Paul..And...”
The “Wedding Song (There is Love)” reached #3 on Billboard's Easy Listening Chart and struck a chord with so many couples, it quickly became a standard. It was certainly the case in 1992 when Nancy and I were married, and it remains so today.
Perhaps Paul was more correct than he even knew when said he felt the song was “divinely inspired.”
Several artists have covered it over the decades—not counting the thousands of friends and relatives who have performed it at weddings all over the world—but one cover made the Top 10 (#9) on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart: 1972's version by Petula Clark.
“The Wedding Song,:” A very special song for Nancy and me...and thousands (maybe millions) of others!
