Sometimes...a Great Song is in the ear of the beholder. Or not.
For example, Chris DeBurgh's 1986/87 hit "The Lady in Red" was voted the third worst song of the 1980s by the readers of Rolling Stone Magazine.
On the other hand, the song was a top 10 hit in 15 countries, topping the charts in Norway, Belgium, Ireland, The UK, South Africa, and Canada. Here in the US, it reached #2 on Billboard's
Adult Contemporary Chart, and #3 on The Hot 100,
On the other hand, it tanked at #67 in France.
(insert French joke here....)
And on the other hand, Chris claims that Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson were moved to tears by the song.
Chris wrote "The Lady in Red" about his wife Diane, whom he met one night when she came to watch him perform. He was initially struck by her beauty, and the bright red dress she was wearing.
It struck him that most men can't recall that sort of detail about their wives, but he would never forget it. And hence..."The Lady in Red!"
So, what do YOU think? Are you like Princess Diana and Fergie...or a French Rolling Stone reader?
Personally, I'm someone who grew up listening Canadian radio...so therefore "The Lady in Red" by Chris DeBurgh is a "Great Song of 1986/87. :-)
