Today's "Great Song of 1975-76" went to #1 on the Hot 100 TWICE, and I'm sure "That's the Way" KC and the Sunshine Band "Liked It" (uh-huh, uh-huh).
Most people think the song was the direct follow-up to their breakthrough #1 hit, "1975's **"Get Down Tonight"** from the group's self-titled second album, but in reality, their follow-up was a song called "Shotgun Shuffle" from KC's THIRD album, "The Sound of Sunshine."
Unfortunately, it failed to chart higher than #88...so they jumped back to album #2 and released "That's the Way I Like It."
There were some who thought the song was too risque, but radio listeners didn't seem to care--and in the discos (I speak from experience!), they embraced it and packed the floor every time it played!
The song was a Top 10 hit in 9 countries, including #1 in The Netherlands and Canada, as well as the US--where it also went to #1 on Billboard's R&B Chart and #18 on the Disco Chart.
After one week at the top, "That's the Way I Like It" was replaced by another disco hit, "Fly Robin Fly" by the Silver Convention (which we may highlight in the near future).
But three weeks after THAT, KC and the Sunshine Band climbed back to the top, and
sent Silver Convention--uhh--flying.
"That's the Way I Like It" by KC & The Sunshine Band:" any song that can hit #1 TWICE and repeatedly fill a dance floor should definitely be considered a "Great Song of the '70s."
**Note: We highlighted "Get Down Tonight" back on 1/5/20. You can read about it here: https://www.facebook.com/MichaelCuuuk/posts/133764691430320
