A Tequila Sunrise is a drink made with tequila and orange juice with some grenadine poured on top to create the red and orange colors of a sunrise.
Today's Great Song of 1973, "Tequila Sunrise" by the Eagles, is NOT about the drink...per se.
It's about a cowboy who has spent many a night drinking tequila and waiting for another lonely day to begin on the trail.
Don Henley and Glenn Frey co-wrote the song for the Eagles' second album, "Desperado," which also featured the western- style ballad of the the same name. (FYI: We highlighted "Desperado" back on 4/9/22): https://www.facebook.com/page/103016317838491/search/...
Don and Glenn intended "Tequila Sunrise" to be a comparison between cowboys and musicians and the transient nature of each job.
Unfortunately, it didn't click with audiences right away, and was not exactly a chart topper, stalling at #26 on Billboard's Easy Listening Chart and a meager #64 on the Hot 100.
But as I've said many times before, charts are not always indicative of how "Great" a song might truly be. Today, "Tequila Sunrise" is regarded as an Eagles classic, and one of their most popular songs.
So pour yourself a shot of tequila and enjoy "Tequila Sunrise" by The Eagles: a "Great Song of 1973!"
