Sometimes a legendary artist is generous with a song they've written, giving a sure-fire hit to someone else instead of keeping it for themselves.
Examples include: In 1963, Brian Wilson gave "Surf City" to Jan and Dean. In 1970, Paul McCartney gave "Come and Get It" to Badfinger.
And in 1974, Stevie Wonder gave "Tell Me Something Good" to Rufus and Chaka Khan.
At this point, Rufus & Chaka were pretty much a regional group from Chicago, but starting with Stevie's gift, they went on to become one of most popular and influential funk bands of the 1970s.
"Tell Me Something Good" had an odd but catchy rhythm, but that didn't stop America from falling in love with it. Not only did it reach #3 on both the Hot 100 and R&B Charts, it won the 1975 Grammy Award for "Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus!"
Thanks, Stevie!
"Tell Me Something Good." All right, I will: It's a "Great Song of the '70s!
