In addition to being a singer/songwriter (and member of the Rock & Roll hall of Fame), Graham Nash is a photographer and a photographic art collector.
One day, he was studying a copy of Diane Arbus' famous photograph, “Child With Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park” https://images.app.goo.gl/JMLBZwJicnSFWGGV9 when he was struck with the “societal implications of messages given to children about war and other issues.”
His deep thoughts on the matter manifested themselves in a song he wrote during the 60s while he was with the Hollies, but wasn't recorded until he teamed up with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Neil Young for the legendary 1970 album, “Deja Vu.”
When “Teach Your Children” was released as a single, it did fairly well on the charts, reaching #16 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #8 on Canada's Top 40. The song made people THINK. And that's what Graham was hoping for.
Trivia: The distinctive steel guitar was played by someone who brought his own special genius to the recording: Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead.
So, from 1970, here's a “Great Song” from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young...and Garcia.
