As you might suspect, today's Great Song of 1984, "Talking in Your Sleep" by The Romantics, is about guy whose girlfriend says nice things about him when she's sleeping.
The scientific name for Sleep Talking is Somniloquy, which would have been a great name for a title if they could have figured out how to rhyme it in the lyrics. Just kidding.
"Talking in Your Sleep" was the last song The Romantics recorded for their album "In Heat," and it was almost an afterthought. They had recorded the backing track, but were running out of time and were about to shelve it for a later release.
However, they were so pleased at how it sounded, they took an extra day or two to come up with lyrics and add the vocals.
Smart move! When "Talking in Your Sleep" was released as a single, it became a Top 20 hit in 11 countries. In the US alone, it appeared on three Billboard Charts: Disco (#1), Hot Rock (#2) and The Hot 100 (#3).
TRIVIA: The song did not chart in the UK--at least for The Romantics. A group called Bucks Fizz released a cover version that reached #15 in England and #14 in Ireland.
TRIVIA #2: The video features a number of ladies in sleepwear--which made it a favorite on MTV. It was shot at 8:00am in Detroit, and according to Romantics' lead singer Jimmy Marinos, "If they looked look like they just woke up, it's because they DID!"
TRIVIA #3: The song was used in a season two episode of "Stranger Things."
