Back on 9/1/21, we highlighted the Scottish group Marmalade, who scored one of the very first "Great Songs of the '70s:" "Reflections of My Life." You can read about it here: https://www.facebook.com/MichaelCuuuk/posts/pfbid02jTzwNi8Fq2Yy2zFH1xXtmBioi2KKyLruc4bnmZ4DKhLjBTX3rMx5V8cpbTNS73del
Other than that, they were pretty much a one-hit wonder in the US... although they charted with a half dozen songs on the British charts.
After 1978, however, they couldn't seem to buy a hit anywhere.
That's unfortunate, because one of their flops turned out to be a "Great Song of 1978."
Country crossover queen (and Loretta Lynn's little sister) Crystal Gayle released "Talking in Your Sleep" as the first single from her album "When I Dream" and it became a triple chart success!
It reached #1 on Billboard's Country Chart, as well as #3 on The Adult Contemporary Chart, and #18 on the Hot 100. In Canada, the numbers were nearly identical: #1 Country, #3 AC and #11 Top 40.
There's nothing really wrong with Marmalade's version...in fact, it's pretty good (Check the link below)...but in 1978, Crystal Gayle was at the peak of her career, had more name recognition...and certainly did a "Great Version" of the song herself! And perhaps it was more believable sung (well) by a female country artist. Just a thought.
