Take the Money and Run - Steve Miller Band (1976) 10/28/21

Updated: Oct 28, 2021

When Steve Miller was a kid, his parents would take him along on road trips, and while they were traveling, they'd crank up the AM radio and sing along with all the "Great Songs."

When Steve grew up and started writing his own songs, he designed many of them to be like the sing-a-long "road songs" of his youth, but with a technical difference: By the mid-'70s, FM had virtually replaced AM as the "go-to radio band. It was clearer, static-free and (most importantly) STEREO.

With that in mind, Steve made sure his songs were upbeat, with a richer, fuller sound and more layers in the mix.

One of his best is today's "Great Song of 1976!"

"Take the Money and Run" is the story of a young couple running from the law after robbing and killing someone (similar to Bonnie & Clyde), but in this case, Billy Joe and Bobby Sue escape the authorities.

When the Steve Miller Band released "Take the Money and Run" from their 1976 album "Fly Like and Eagle," it reached #11 on Billboard's Hot 100...and most likely would have reached the Top 10 on the "Sing Along Road Song" chart, had such a thing existed.

TRIVIA: Here's a clue to figuring out which songs Steve intended to be "road songs:" if it mentions a location, state or city...it's on the list. For example, "Jet Airliner" mentions New England, and "Rockin' Me" mentions Northern California, Phoenix, Tacoma, Atlanta and Philadelphia. "Take the Money and Run" mentions El Paso.

Crank it up and sing along! "Take the Money and Run" by the Steve Miller Band: A "Great Road Song" of 1976!
