Take Me Home - Phil Collins (1986) 11/12/23

Phil Collins spent the better part of the '80s cranking out Great Songs.

Today, we're highlighting one of his best: "Take Me Home" from his 1985 album, "No Jacket Required."

The song refers to a patient in a mental institution, and was inspired by the film "one Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Not exactly standard subject matter for a hit record, but Phil pulled it off quite nicely. In fact, music critics were extremely complimentary, using words like "hypnotic, engaging, wistful, introspective, and hummable."

"Take Me Home" had a staggered release: July of '85 in Ireland and the UK, where it peaked at #13 and #19 respectively...and in March of '86 in Canada and the US, where it did quite a bit better: #2 on the Adult Contemporary Charts in both countries. It also reached #7 on Billboard's Hot 100.

For more than 10 years thereafter, Phil would perform "Take Me Home" to close his concerts--which makes perfect sense.

Elsewhere, the song was used for many years by the WWF to open their "Saturday Main Event" wrestling series...and on the TV show "Miami Vice."

"Take Me Home" by Phil Collins: a Great Song of 1985/86!

T

omorrow: Thankfully, George didn't chicken out.
