Take Me Home - Cher (1979) 12/19/21

It was 1979, and Cher had been going through a serious dry spell.

Her last FOUR albums (1975's "Stars," 1976's "I'd Rather Believe in You," and 1977's "Cherish" and "Two the Hard Way") were complete commercial failures.

She decided to shake things up by recording an album of hard rock...but Neil Bogart, the president of her record label (Casablanca), suggested she dip her toes into disco instead.

Cher was reluctant, telling Neil she didn't think disco was "serious" music, but agreed to give it a try anyway.

She met with producer Bob Esty, who, at first, didn't think Cher and disco were a good match. But then he played her a demo of "Take Me Home."

Cher actually liked the song, and when Bob started working with her, magic happened!

As Cher poured her "diva attitude" into the song, Bob realized they had a hit on their hands. And he was right.

The song was actually released as a 12-inch single, and it became Cher's biggest hit in years...reaching #2 on the Dance chart, #8 on the Hot 100 and #19 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. In Canada, it peaked at #10 on the Top 40 and #11 on the Dance Chart.

After a years-long delay, Cher was back...big time...starting her reign as a "disco diva" with "Take Me" Home," a "Great Song of 1979" (Thanks, in part to Neil Bogart and Bob Esty).
