Sweet Mary - Wadsworth Mansion (1971) 3/16/23

It's been a while since I've highlighted a bubblegum song that wasn't attached to a name like Osmond, Jackson, or Partridge.

In 1971, a one-hit wonder came out of Rhode Island with a name taken from an historic building located in Middletown, Connecticut.

Their name was Wadsworth Mansion, which is currently part of a State Park and a luxury wedding venue.

The song was "Sweet Mary," and it fit the definition of "bubblegum" music quite well. (Catchy and Upbeat, but Disposable and usually about love, marketed to tweens and teens.")

"Sweet Mary" was all of those things, wrapped up in a nice 3-minute package--with cowbell!

The kids loved it, and so did many adults!

"Sweet Mary" was released in late 1970, and in early '71,it climbed into the Top 10 in both Canada (#5) and the US (#7)."

Wadsworth Mansion released 2 songs after "Sweet Mary," but both sank without a trace. Still, they scored a Top 10 record, and in my opinion it was bubblegum at its best...and, in context, a "Great Song of 1971!
