Sweet Hitchhiker - CCR (1971) 8/1/21

Writer's picture: Michael CookMichael Cook

In the late '60s and early '70s, Creedence Clearwater cranked out "Great Song" after "Great Song."

Unfortunately, bitter internal bickering (which, by the way, has never been resolved), caused the group to break up in 1972.

But before it all ended, they were able to crank out one last Top 10 hit, and it was it a masterpiece of swamp rock--as well as a "Great Song of '71!"!

"Sweet Hitchhiker" was a hit in 9 countries, including #1 in Canada and Switzerland (of all places), and #6 in the US.

One can only wonder how many other "Great Songs" CCR could've had if they had just gotten along. But still, their body of work was amazing, and, with "Sweet Hitchhiker," they saved one of their best, for last!
