Stumblin' In - Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman (1979) 10/24

Today, the story of how two artists, both successful in the UK, joined forces and "stumbled into" becoming an American One-Hit Wonder!

In late 1978, American glam rocker Suzi Quatro, best known in the US--not for her music--but as Leather Tuscadero on "Happy Days," and Chris Norman, lead singer of a British group called Smokie, scored a "Great Song of the '70s" with "Stumblin' In."

The song as written and produced by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, who--as I mentioned a few days ago--were fired by The Sweet after they felt could do a better job producing "Fox on the Run."

Turns out that Suzi was also a Chapman and Chinn client, and Chris had worked with them closely with Smokie. Chapman came up with the duet idea, and the opening line, "Our love is alive." Both Suzi and Chris loved the idea, so Chapman and Chinn finished writing it, then produced and released it.

By early 1979, "Stumblin' In" had become a worldwide hit: #1 in Canada, #2 in Australia, New Zealand, Germany and South Africa, and #4 in the US on both the Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary Charts. It also sold well over a million copies.

Once 1980 arrived however, both Suzi and Chris returned to hitmaking in the UK, but neither one of them ever scored another Top 40 hit in the US, either as a solo act, or

as a duet.

But "Stumblin' In" is a "Great Song of the '70s," and certainly no stumble!

Note: The song was recently used in the Netflix drama, "Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story."
