Not many members of the U.S. House of Representatives can claim they had co-written and performed a ”Great Song of the '70s,” but Rep. John Hall of New York, who served in the House from 2007-2011 could do just that!
In 1972, Hall was a founding member of the group Orleans, and continued to tour with them until last year.
In 1975, a friend of his wife Johanna asked her why there were so many breakup songs...and no “stay together.” songs. Good question, and Johanna was inspired to come up with an answer. She wrote down some “stay together” lyrics on a napkin and handed them off to her husband, who created the music for “Still the One” in less than a half hour!
Shortly thereafter, Orleans went into the studio to record it, and shortly after THAT (in 1976), the song was released as a single and climbed to #5 on Billboard's Hot 100, and #9 on Canada's Top 40.
In 1977-78, ABC-TV used it to,promote their lineup of hit shows. The “Nine” TV Network of Australia did the same from the late '70s into the early 2000s!
“We're still havin' fun,” so “Still the One” has my vote for a “Great Song of the '70s!” :)
