Steppin' Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight) - Tony Orlando & Dawn (1974) 11/14/22

One of the top recording groups of the early-to-mid '70s was Tony Orlando and Dawn.

Tony and the ladies (Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson) released a number of Pop classics, such as "Tie a Yellow Ribbon ('Round the Oak Tree") which we highlighted back on 6/14/21.

They even dipped their vocal chords into some old fashioned ragtime music, with great success.

For example, in 1974, they released an album called "Dawn's New Ragtime Follies, and a "old-timey" single called "Steppin' Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight").

If that seems odd, it's because we're looking back from 2022, and the musical landscape of the '70s was far more open to all genres than it is today.

That said, "Steppin' Out." was definitely a "Great Ragtime Song," and a big hit, too...reaching #4 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart and #7 on the Hot 100.

Trivia: In case you've been streaming old TV shows, you may have noticed that Telma Hopkins was a featured actress on several shows, including "Bosom Buddies" (with Tom Hanks), "Gimme Break," and "Family Matters." She continues to pop up on new shows today.
