Way back on December 16th, in honor of the official release of the film, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” I highlighted the original 1977 John Williams version of the “Star Wars” theme. And rightfully so: the song was a Top 10 hit—very rare for a symphonic instrumental movie theme. You can read about it here: https://www.facebook.com/MichaelCuuuk/posts/122435169229939
At the time, there were several folks who commented that I should have highlighted the OTHER version that was on the chart at the time—the version that went to #1 in both the US and Canada. They had a point, and I promised I would write it up some point in the future.
And then I forgot about it. Until now.
Meco's version of the “Star Wars/Cantina Theme” was edited down from an entire 15-minute suite that took up all of side one of the album, “Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk—an amazing piece of music that basically went through the original movie and tackled each theme (in order) in one continuous and coherent disco masterpiece.
In my opinion, it was a great version of a “Great Song of the '70s,' but to get the full effect of its greatness, you need to listen to the whole thing!
So set aside some time, listen to the single...then listen to the album version. To misquote Obi Wan Kenobi: “THIS is the version you're looking for!”
