Stand Tall - Burton Cummings (1976) 1/28/21

Updated: Mar 21, 2021

1975 was a tough year for Burton Cummings. His group, The Guess Who, had broken up after several years of cranking out hits, and his girlfriend left him for someone else.

As he was preparing to record his first solo album, he took his anger, frustration and despondency and poured it into composing new music.

That was actually a GOOD thing. In the fall of 1976, and crossing over into 1977, the first single from the “Burton Cummings” LP became a “Great Song of the '70s!

“Stand Tall” was a message of perseverance to himself—as well as radio listeners in the US and his native Canada. It spent 21 weeks on the charts, reaching #2 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart and #10 on the Hot 100. Up North, it topped the Canadian AC Chart and peaked at #4 on the Top 40. It was also a Top 10 hit in Australia and South Africa.

Burton was later nominated for the 1977 Juno Award (Canada's equivalent of the Grammys) for best composer!

If he didn't have a reason to “Stand Tall” in 1976, he certainly did in 1977!
