Special Lady - Ray, Goodman & Brown (1980) 10/16/23

In 1970, The Moments scored a "Great Song" with "Love on a Two Way Street, which reached #1 on Billboard's R&B Chart and #3 on the Hot 100. (We highlighted that song back on 6/25/22.) (Check the link below.)

After that, they had a few more Top 20 R&B hits, but they also went through several personnel changes--so many, in fact, you'd need an an Excel Spreadsheet to keep track of them!

By the time 1978 rolled around, they decided their "Moments" had passed, and came up with a new name--which was actually the name of the their lineup at the time: Harry Ray, Al Goodman and Billy Brown--none of whom were original members.

Actually, Ray, Goodman and Brown had kind of a nice ring to it, and under that name, they released today's Great Song of 1980, "Special Lady."

The song was a big hit in the US, topping Billboard's R&B chart, and reaching #5 on the Hot 100. Oddly, it charted nowhere else in the world! Still, it was a Great Song, with some cool acapella harmonies, group interaction...and finger snaps!

After "Special Lady," the lineup continued to change repeatedly. Harry and Al passed away, and at one point, Billy was out for an extended period of time due to a stroke. Thankfully, he recovered and is still fronting the group in 2023.

So when "Special Lady" is performed today, it's as close to the original Great Song of 1980 as humanly possible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTkltW7ckIk
