A brief explanation before I get to today's "Great Song of 1977:"
When Fleetwood Mac's Christine McVie passed away on 11/20/22, I wanted to post a tribute to her right away. I looked to see what Fleetwood Mac hits were written and/or sung by her, and which, if any, I had yet to highlight.
I immediately found "Over My Head," and highlighted that song in my tribute. It was certainly a worthy choice: it was released from the 1975 album "Fleetwood Mac" (aka The White Album) and it was the first hit the group had in 6 years, reaching #20 on the Hot 100 and #9 in Canada.
But in the days following my post, it became apparent that I may have missed the BEST Christine McVie song--at least the one most critics and hardcore fans mentioned as their favorite:
"Songbird."
They're not wrong. "Songbird" (from the "Rumours" album) is gorgeous--a testament to Christine's incredible skills as a singer/songwriter. It was released as the "B" side to "Dreams,"
which is a "Great Song in its own right, but if "Songbird" had been released separately, there's no doubt in anyone's mind that it would have been a HUGE chart hit.
Within the band, it was Mick Fleetwood's favorite song, and everyone agreed that it was the perfect song to close every Fleetwood Mac concert: Just Christine and her piano, with very few--if any--embellishments.
It all adds up: "Songbird" is a "Great Song of the '70s," and continues to be so today!
